Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

  • A relevant read for our generation!

Such a relevant and well written novel that leaves the reader rooting for Starr and her voice. Thomas speaks of the social justice issues of our times with truth and strength. Hoping it inspires our generation to continue using their voice to stand up to injustice!

The hate you give is such an phenomenal read, I’m grateful for this author giving me something more to look forward to sharing with the youth of my family, Heck even the greats! This book is amazing and I recommend it to everyone I cross paths with. An emotional roller coaster, I cried and laughed many times throughout the book and I can’t wait to see it in motion picture. -A.Manor 18’

Race-baiting vitriol. I read the first chapter and wanted to throw it out the window of the 777 I was in.

Cause it's soooo hard being a young black female in the 21st century?
  • Pretty good!! 😊

The book is very well written, I will warn you there is language, and hard topics mentioned in this book. I’m so excited about the movie! (I heard) I was getting a pretty “depressing” vibe from the book. So I will warn you, maybe for mature readers. I’m 12 and I was able to handle it. But I have a higher reading/emotional level than most.

It is a heart breaking, and eye opening to how some people’s lives can be. Also how different peoples live are.
  • great book!

This is by far the best book that I have ever read. It focuses on topics that are uncomfortable for many people to speak of and it gives an inside look on how many people’s daily lives are.
