From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game comes Ruth Ware’s highly anticipated fourth novel.

On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.

Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

This book would be good for a fourteen year old. Just not interesting.
  • Well Done

The story is well conceived and executed. The writing is not what one would consider high literature, but it is well done for a contemporary audience.
  • Not that interesting

My father started reading this book three days ago and has already finished it. He was stunned on how it ended and recommended it for me. My dad and I have the same taste in books so I was super excited! But I guess with this book it was different. The storyline was great, pretty good murder plot, but the characters just kept droning on and on and on. I stopped about halfway through the book and maybe the ending was more intense, but I was too bored to find out. Definitely do not recommend this to anyone who wants a scare!

Good read. Reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel.
  • Fizzled

Book dragged on with one uneventful chapter after another. Her first novel was fine but each one thereafter has been a little worse than the previous one. End of my buying.
  • Another great read from Ruth Ware

If you've read her other books (which I highly recommend), you'll enjoy this one as well. It's a page turner as you try to put the pieces together until the end.
  • Repetitive

Describing a person and their emotions a couple times ok, but every other chapter, over and over is boring. Five stars, no way.
  • So so

Had heard glowing review on NPR. Have never read this author before and sounded good. But it wasn't. Repetitive writing, boring characters, expected story. No twists, turns or surprises. Disappointed. Will delete samples of other books by this author.
  • Boring and confusing

Book was too long and uneventful
  • Bad

Frankly I’m puzzled by all the 5 star reviews, and I’m annoyed that I was swayed by them into purchasing this book. The writing is tedious, the character development is flimsy and pointless, and the “chilling mystery” is predictable. Don’t waste your time or money on this lightweight garbage. If you are looking for some real gothic thrills written by someone with actual literary talent, go read the Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.
